ecoSanity's Take on Earth (EMERGENCY) Hour 2010
As Earth Hour approaches, ecoSanity invites volunteers (more details further down) to join us for a couple of FUN hours on March 27th, 2010, at Dundas Square in downtown Toronto.
But how can we justify participation in an event that is, in so many ways, the illusion of 'green'?
Preceded by several pleasant paragraphs and buried at the bottom of the About Earth Hour page on the international website, we found this statement:
"New economic modelling indicates the world has just five years to initiate a low carbon industrial revolution before runaway climate change becomes almost inevitable."
This is where ecoSanity comes in.
We mobilize to communicate what too many don't, the way too many won't. Up front!
The climate crisis is a an EMERGENCY:
- Rich nations have been the primary cause;
- 99% of all deaths linked to climate change (breakdown) occur in poor countries;
- Those least responsible and least able to cope are hit first and hardest;
- Hundreds of thousands die each year;
- Millions are displaced and suffer;
- 4 billion are already vulnerable.
It is the greatest threat to global human rights and livelihood -- ever. And it's a clear, present, accelerating danger to most life -- NOW.
We take part in Earth Hour each year because it's a remarkable international phenomenon. People like it and they engage in unprecedented numbers, which is the argument for its celebratory approach.
But while individual acts and influence are essential, the only chance to ensure the 'survival of all peoples and all species' beyond this century is:
An EMERGENCY international mobilization at EMERGENCY, world war-time scale, scope and speed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to as close to ZERO as possible as FAST as possible.
A 'global green Manhattan Project' will also be necessary to figure out how to remove excess CO2/other gasses from our fragile, saran wrap-thin atmosphere AND cool the Earth to the extent, and within the rapidly closing window of opportunity, necessary to prevent imminent, irreversible global catastrophe.
At present, our climate is in acceleration toward potentially unsurvivable runaway collapse within the lifetimes of today's children.
ecoSanity mobilizes to communicate what too many don't, the way too many won't. Up front!
Get informed. Get inspired. Get involved (Ways 2 Act Now) and help to motivate bold, new, transformative approaches and just, sustainable, EMERGENCY SOLUTIONS -- FAST.
On March 27th, help bring urgency to Earth Hour in YOUR community.
And in Toronto, VOLUNTEER for some FUN with ecoSanity at Yonge-Dundas Square.
The climax of our all-March long ecoACTathon...
VOLUNTEERS WANTED to help ecoSanity bring urgency to Earth (EMERGENCY) Hour, Toronto!
We want a big 'turnout' (get it?) to stage an essential, non-disruptive display and shoot FUN pics and video at the large, outdoor, family-friendly concert at Dundas Square. (Chantal Kreviazuk)
Stay with us after and we'll head somewhere as candlelit as possible (location to be confirmed) for a little cheer and good talk about all that's coming up over the next few months.
Lights OFF. Live ON. Join us!
