Report on Project Survival Protest at 2008 UN Climate Conference, Poznan, Poland
On Feb. 11, 2009, Lauryn Drainie, member of the Canadian Youth Delegation to the December 2008, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Poznan, Poland, spoke at the Toronto Climate Campaign's, Poznan Post Mortem & Copenhagen Countdown report back, about the conception of Project Survival, and the hundreds-strong youth protest that was initiated on the final day of the conference.
Project Survival was inspired by a representative from the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), who stated that the current global emissions targets set by powerful countries will condemn their nations to extinction. Its unifying principle: to "safeguard the survival of all peoples and nations."

Article - Lord Stern on global warming: It’s even worse than I thought [The former chief economist for the World Bank and author of the 2006 Stern Review: The Economics of Climate Change] said new research done in the past two or three years had made it clear there were “severe risks” if global temperature rose by the predicted +4 ºC to +7 ºC by 2100. Agriculture would be destroyed and life would be impossible over much of the planet.
(Note: On our present course, there's a 50-50 chance the world will become more than +5 ºC warmer than it was before industrialization by 2100. The last time the Earth was that warm was 30 - 50 million years ago. The last time it was even +3 ºC warmer was 3 million years ago and we are headed toward that mark long before 2100. Humans are only 100,000 years old. For a variety of disturbing reasons, we -- along with most other life -- could not reasonably exist in such extreme conditions.)
Article - New clock ticks at sluggish U.N. climate talks Organisers of the talks have set up a new ”Countdown to Copenhagen” clock in the main hall to try to spur the sluggish negotiations. It shows 248 days left until the talks in the Danish capital in December... But in many ways it’s misleading because, as U.N. climate change chief Yvo de Boer pointed out at the start of the 11-day meeting on March 29, there are only 6 weeks of formal negotiations left to work out a new global response to climate change.
Article - Small islands urge deep CO2 cuts, fear rising seas An alliance of 43 island states, backed by more than a dozen nations in Africa and Latin America, urged developed countries at U.N. climate talks in Bonn on Thursday to cut greenhouse emissions by "at least 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2020."... The small islands had called at a U.N. climate meeting in Poznan, Poland, in December 2008 for cuts of "more than 40 percent" in industrialized nations' emissions by 2020... "Why would small island states be happy with a level of ambition that is going to destroy their countries?" Mace said.
