Since everything else is, or will soon be, symptomatic of this larger process that is on course to dramatically amplify every threat and injustice humanity has ever attempted to reduce or avoid, we take direct, local action, but concentrate the majority of our research, analysis and advocacy on the big, climate emergency picture and bottom line.

 

   We Advocate For Emergency Political & Economic Transformation

Global heating and climate breakdown are, themselves, the most epic symptoms of the need for a brisk, systemic re-conception
of our global political and economic processes toward just, equitable, post-partisan, post-carbon and post-rapacious, pathological consumerism incarnations that, unlike their current forms, can accommodate the emergency action necessary to attempt to ensure
a survivable future for our children and all life.

 

   Total Independence & Clear, Undiluted Truth Based on the Latest Science

ecoSanity.org is in no way subject to any form of corporate or governmental influence or financial support. This allows us to expose diluted, mainstream misinformation about the true extent of the climate crisis based on the most up to date science, and without pressures to acquiesce to political agendas, group consensus or compromise.

 

   We Call it What it is & Call on Others to State the Same: Climate Emergency!

 

The acceleration of climate breakdown toward climate tipping points -- a threshold wrongly promoted by governments and even many environmental organizations as a global average temp increase of +2 ºC or more, when it has in fact been shown to be +1.5 ºC or less -- is now RAPID.

At our present level of a mere +0.8 ºC, billions are already vulnerable and those least responsible and least able to cope suffer or die by increasing hundreds of millions per year.

The +2 ºC target is no longer achievable and if a switch could be flicked off tomorrow, inertia would continue to heat the atmosphere beyond +2 ºC (Climate Congress Synthesis, Pg 18, June, 2009).

The climate crisis is an unprecedented global emergency NOW. So much so that, at present, the world's atmosphere is not only on course for, but accelerating toward, a potentially unsurvivable state of runaway climate collapse within the lifetimes of today's children. This is implicit in the conclusions of the latest science, but it is a betrayal of the public that this reality and the full extent and immediacy of the danger is not often communicated with clarity.

 

   The Climate Crisis is the Greatest Threat to Global Human Rights Ever

 

It is impossible to advocate for ecological sustainability without an equal commitment to expose and denounce issues of profound social inequity and economic injustice.

The richest 2% of the world's population own more than 50% of all wealth, the bottom 50% only own 1%, 50% of all emissions are contributed by only 13% of global pop and 99% of deaths linked to climate breakdown occur in developing countries. The way we in rich nations have CHOSEN to live, KILLS the people of the poorest, undeveloped countries - those least responsible for the problem and least able to cope.

 

   Only Chance: A Greater Than WW2-Equivalent, Emergency Mass-Mobilization

As outlined in the essential book, Climate Code Red, and informed by the work of NASA's Dr. James Hansen, authors David Spratt and Philip Sutton warn that, if humanity is to survive, only emergency international action far beyond economics and politics as usual has any chance to concurrently:

• HALT man made emissions to near ZERO as fast as possible through conservation and carbon rationing;
• Initiate an immediate and rapid global shift from rampant fossil-fuel addiction to clean, renewable energy;
• Maximize investment into research, development and implementation in order to figure out how to REMOVE
  the dangerous, excess CO2 and methane from the atmosphere and attempt to COOL THE EARTH to the extent,
  and within the rapidly closing window of opportunity necessary to prevent irreversible, runaway climate collapse.

 

   We Organize, Mobilize & Protest

 

ecoSanity.org engages a growing community of volunteer activists to participate in public events, protests and high profile media opportunities.

We take peaceful, 'nonviolent, direct action' when appropriate and speak hard, loud, undiluted truth to power with visible passion and urgency.

We work with and compliment other organizations, attend events they aren't able to and take action when they can't.

And we participate in - and sometimes offer facilitation services to - a larger coalition of individuals and organizations.

We expose or promote the most important or influential local, national and international voices in short video compilations. We also offer video and stills services for hire.

About our Non-Charitable Status

Under Canadian law, environmental advocacy and activism are not recognized within charitable status guidelines. Were we to become a charity, the strict rules of operation would require us to mute our critical voice and protest activity, which is a big reason why few groups do what we do. As a result, in order to maintain our independence and essential freedom of political expression, we regret that we are unable to issue tax receipts.
