MAPS & GRAPHS
THE WORLD'S REMAINING GREAT FORESTS
The Guardian, December 13, 2007
Interactive map - The Earth was once covered in ancient forests, 80% of which have been either destroyed or degraded, according to conservationists. Half of that has been in the last 30 years. Countless species face extinction. Entire communities are being displaced. Deforestation is estimated to cause one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. Click on the green circles to find out more.
MAP OF THE OIL WORLD
NY Times, November 6, 2007
Interactive map of the world's oil producers, consumers, and suppliers to the United States. In 2006, Saudi Arabia was by far the largest producer of oil, followed by Russia and United States. On average, the U.S. consumed 20.6 million barrels per day, which made it the largest oil consumer in the world.
STATE OF THE WORLD IN GRAPHICS
BBC News, October 25, 2007
Various graphs and graphics - population growth, emissions, humanity's ecological footprint, decreasing biodiversity and available fresh water, and urban sprawl. Globally human populations are growing, trade is increasing, and living standards are rising for many. But, according to the UN's latest Global Environment Outlook report, long-term problems including climate change, pollution, access to clean water, and the threat of mass extinctions are being met with "a remarkable lack of urgency".

ECONOMICS OF TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE
BBC News, May 4, 2007
This graph shows the IPCC estimates for the reductions in emissions that could be achieved cost-effectively from various sectors with a carbon price of $50 per tonne of CO2-equivalent. Below it is a guide to the key areas where the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) believes the reductions can be achieved.
WINNERS AND LOSERS IN A CHANGING CLIMATE
NY Times, April, 2007
3 maps detail the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's estimation of the countries that will be least affected, those that will be most affected, and those that will be most able to adapt to the immanent impacts of climate change in the coming decades.

PREDICTIONS OF ACCELERATED CLIMATE CHANGE
Met Office, The Hadley Centre, March, 2007
The most important graphs in existence! The statements of the February 2007 installment of the IPCC report did not incorporate the estimated impacts of feedback loops. These graphs do. The short version: double all the figures and cut the timeline in half. We must all - act - now!

31 DAYS IN IRAQ
NY Times, Adriana Lins de Albuquerque and Alicia Cheng, February 3, 2007
This map, based on data from the American, British and Iraqi governments and from news reports, shows the dates, locations and circumstances of deaths for the first month of the year. Given the vast size of Iraq and the communications difficulties inherent in war, the information may be incomplete. Nonetheless, it is our effort to visually depict the continuing human cost of the Iraq war.
CLIMATE CHANGE IN GRAPHICS FROM THE 2007 IPCC REPORT
BBC News, February 2, 2007
Surface temperature, global warming and carbon dioxide projections from the 2007 'Intergovernmental panel on climate change' (IPCC) report.
THE LIVING PLANET: FACTS AND FIGURES
BBC News, October 24, 2006
The planet's natural resources are being consumed faster than they can be replaced, according to the WWF. If current trends continue two planets would be needed by 2050 to meet humanity's demands. Graphs include: ecological footprint per person, per country; humanity's ecological footprint and the planet's health; global ecological footprints; eco debtors and creditors.
GLOBAL CLIMATE EFFORTS 'WOEFUL'
BBC News, August 21, 2006
Efforts to help developing nations adapt to the impacts of climate change have been called "woefully inadequate" by a UN-commissioned report. Includes global water stress map and map of projected impact of climate change on cereal productivity in Africa.
PORTRAIT OF A PERFECT ECONOMIC STORM
YES! Magazine, David Korten, Summer, 2006
Climate change, financial meltdown, and peak oil (see graphs) will devastate those segments of the economy dependent on oil subsidies and stable global supply lines. These are no longer future issues. A dramatic restructuring of the way we live, including a return to local food and energy self-reliance, has become an imperative.

GLOBAL WARMING: THE LAST CHANCE FOR CHANGE
The Guardian, Paul Brown, April, 2007
These pictures are taken from Global Warning: The Last Chance for Change, a book by former Guardian environment correspondent Paul Brown. The pictures show how the world is changing and have been chosen to support Brown's explanation of how climate change is having an impact on the natural world and its inhabitants. Disappearing ice and forests, and dust storms from enlarging deserts are all serious problems for our planet.

SHOCKING NASA ANIMATIONS OF MELTING ARCTIC ICE!
The following NASA animations were posted on YouTube by desmogblog.com:
Notice how rapid and substantial the melt-off (average minimum sea-ice) has been in the last 2 years compared to the years previous, not to mention the total amount of melting since 1979.
As stated in the next posted video's description by desmogblog.com...
"Sea ice is frozen seawater floating on the surface of the ocean. Some sea ice is semi-permanent, persisting from year to year, and some is seasonal, melting and refreezing from season to season. The sea ice cover reaches its minimum extent at the end of each summer and the remaining ice is called the perennial ice cover. The 2007 Arctic summer sea ice has reached the lowest extent of perennial ice cover on record - nearly 25% less than the previous low set in 2005."
